The Makalu Base Camp Trek – 20 days is a tough, remote adventure into Makalu-Barun National Park, one of Nepal’s wildest corners. Starting with a short flight to Tumlingtar and a jeep to Chichila, the trail climbs through Seduwa and Tashigaon into rhododendron forests and ridge country, then crests the high passes around Shipton La to drop into the starkly beautiful Barun Valley. You’ll push up through yak pastures at Yangri Kharka and Langmale to reach Makalu Base Camp (4,870 m)—a raw amphitheater of rock, ice and sky with distant views to Everest and Lhotse.
Facilities are simple and the days are long, but this route rewards experienced trekkers with true wilderness, few crowds, and a classic out-and-back that feels different on the return. We’ve built in smart pacing and one exploration/rest day high up to stack the odds for comfort and success. Best seasons are spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) for firm trails and clear skies.
